influenciam a resposta sexual.
A resposta sexual subjetiva aquando a exposição
(homem/mulher), expetativas (“homem”/”mulher”), e preferências sexuais.Body odor is crucial to mammalian sexual behavior and seems to be used as
an aid in mate selection. Findings suggest that males rate visual and olfactory
information as being equally important for selecting a lover, while females
consider olfactory information to be the single most important variable in mate
choice. Although the effects of fragrance on an induced sexual response in
females have been investigated no such study has been performed with body
odors and with both females and males. The current study’s overall aim is to
establish an experimental paradigm in which the mechanisms by which body
odor can affect the sexual response can be specified. To this end, we
investigated if body odors influence the sexual response in humans and
whether it is dependent on the sex of the participant. To test this effect, male
and female participants watched a sexually explicit move clip while being
exposed to a body odor previously collected from a person of the opposite sex
or no odor (blank). The subjective sexual response during the exposure to the
sexually explicit movie was assessed and related to the odor condition
(opposite sex body odor or blank).
Overall, body odor affects the sexual response to erotic film clips. This effect
seems to be driven by women’s sexual response and may be explained by that
women on average perceived the body odor stimulus as somewhat unpleasant.
Men did not perceive the blank and the body odor stimulus as different in
intensity and pleasantness. These observations may explain why men’s sexual
response did not differ between the body odor and the blank condition. With
this as an experimental paradigm for examining the effect of body odor on the
sexual response, future studies can examine the effects not only of the gender
of the participants but also the origin of the body odor (male/female), cover
story (“male”/”female”), and sexual preference
Boosting children's creativity through creative interactions with social robots
Creativity is an ability with psychological and developmental benefits. Creative levels are
dynamic and oscillate throughout life, with a first major decline occurring at the age of 7 years
old. However, creativity is an ability that can be nurtured if trained, with evidence suggesting an
increase in this ability with the use of validated creativity training. Yet, creativity training for
young children (aged between 6-9 years old) appears as scarce. Additionally, existing training
interventions resemble test-like formats and lack of playful dynamics that could engage children
in creative practices over time. This PhD project aimed at contributing to creativity stimulation
in children by proposing to use social robots as intervention tools, thus adding playful and
interactive dynamics to the training. Towards this goal, we conducted three studies in schools,
summer camps, and museums for children, that contributed to the design, fabrication, and
experimental testing of a robot whose purpose was to re-balance creative levels. Study 1 (n =
140) aimed at testing the effect of existing activities with robots in creativity and provided initial
evidence of the positive potential of robots for creativity training. Study 2 (n = 134) aimed at
including children as co-designers of the robot, ensuring the robot’s design meets children’s
needs and requirements. Study 3 (n = 130) investigated the effectiveness of this robot as a tool
for creativity training, showing the potential of robots as creativity intervention tools. In sum,
this PhD showed that robots can have a positive effect on boosting the creativity of children.
This places social robots as promising tools for psychological interventions.
The role of intestinal and vaginal dysbiosis in endometrial cancer: an integrative review
The increase in the incidence of endometrial neoplasms in the female population is associated with increased life expectancy and the lifestyle adopted in our daily lives. The way we eat influences the profile of our bacterial flora and the production of substances that can work as suppressor tumors or oncogenic. Dysbiosis leads to changes in the intestinal and vaginal bacterial barrier and promotes chronic inflammation and metabolic and hormonal changes that influence the carcinogenesis of gynecological tumors. Chemotherapy treatments can also change the composition of the intestinal microbiota and influence the efficacy and toxic effects, as well as the quality of life of these patients. The use of prebiotics, probiotics, or fecal transplantation can be useful both in prevention and in obtaining better results with chemotherapy treatment and better quality of life. The objective of this review is to provide further elucidation about the interaction mechanisms between the intestinal microbiota and the gynecological tract and assess future perspectives through the modification of the feeding pattern, use of prebiotics, probiotics, and fecal transplant both in the prevention and during the treatment of carrier patients of endometrial neoplasm
Estudos in vivo e in vitro indicam que a exposição a alumínio inibe
A exposição in vitro dos
Aluminium is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust and its exposure
increasing in industrialized societies. In an increasingly aging society where the
number of cases of neurodegenerative diseases is increasing, it seems
important to clarify the cellular mechanisms of the neurotoxicity of aluminium to
prevent its effects. In vivo and in vitro studies indicate that exposure to
aluminium inhibits the activity of (Na+/K+)ATPase, a protein responsible for the
maintenance and regulation of the electrochemical gradients of the plasma
membranes, and that susceptibility to intoxicaton by aluminium in the diet may
be influenced by cholesterol, since chronic oral exposure to aluminium reduces
the molar ratio of cholesterol/phospholipid in synaptosomes. Thus this work
aims to clarify how the different levels of cholesterol affects the inhibition of
synaptosomal (Na+/K+)ATPase induced by aluminium. In this context were used
as the study groups, the control in which no manipulation of the content of
cholesterol in synaptosomal membrane was made; incorporation, where the
cholesterol content was increased synaptosomal membrane; depletion, wherein
the cholesterol content of the membrane synaptosomal was reduced. The
changes in membrane cholesterol content of synaptosomes were induced
using the compound methyl-β-cyclodextrin and the activity of (Na+/K+) ATPase
synaptosomal measured by colorimetry and potentiometry. In this study, there
was a ~70% increase synaptosomal cholesterol relative to control, and reduced
cholesterol content compared to the same synaptosomal ~62%. The in vitro
exposure of synaptosomes to 300 μM AlCl3 inhibited the activity of
(Na+/K+)ATPase in the three groups (control, incorporation and depletion). In
control synaptosomes which the cholesterol content was 183 ± 48 μg
cholesterol/mg protein, in vitro exposure to 300 μM AlCl3 led to an inhibition of
the activity of (Na+/K+)ATPase of 76.39%, while in the presence of 279 ± 54 μg
cholesterol/mg protein (incorporation of cholesterol) aluminium had an inhibitory
effect on the activity of (Na+/K+)ATPase of 72.88%. Conversely, lowest
cholesterol levels (57 ± 16 μg cholesterol/mg protein) aluminium had an
inhibitory effect on the activity of (Na+/K+)ATPase of 37.82%. These results
show that changes in cholesterol content of synaptosome membranes play an
important role in the action of aluminium on the (Na+/K+)ATPase. Thus, it
appears that low levels of membrane cholesterol attenuate the inhibitory effect
of aluminium on the activity of (Na+/K+)ATPase
A DM
a retinopatia diabéticas.
simultâneo do pâncreas e do rim [SPKT] restabelecendo eficazmente a função endócrina e
renal.
Web of Science, da qual resultaram 17 artigos posteriormente incluídos nesta revisão.
characterized by insufficient pancreatic insulin production or by the body's inability to use
the hormone, leading to a persistent hyperglycaemic state. Type 2 DM is responsible for
most of the cases, affecting 90-95% of diabetes’ patients.
The persistent hyperglycaemia to which these patients are subject results in
numerous harmful effects, leading to complications such as nephropathy, neuropathy, and
diabetic retinopathy.
Diabetic nephropathy is the main cause of end-stage Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
and is characterised as a progressive decrease in kidney function. Thus, selected patients
with concurrent end-stage CKD and diabetes may benefit from simultaneous pancreas and
kidney transplantation [SPKT] by effectively restoring endocrine and renal function.
In addition to this type of pancreatic transplant, others are addressed in this review:
PBKT [Pancreas Before Kidney Transplantation], PTA (Pancreas Transplantation Alone),
SPLKT [Simultaneous Pancreas, Liver and Kidney Transplantation], PAKT [Pancreas After
Kidney Transplantation], PALT [Pancreas After Liver Transplantation] and FPSCT [Fetal
Pancreatic Stem Cell Transplantation].
If, on the one hand, the judicious performance of pancreatic transplantation in type
1 diabetics is consensual, the same does not yet apply to type 2 diabetes, where its appliance
is still questioned. Thus, this review aims to analyse what are the main outcomes associated
with pancreatic transplantation in type 2 diabetics and to assess its viability. For this, we
performed a literature search in PubMed, Scopus and ISI Web of Science, resulting in 17
articles later included in this review which described pancreatic transplantations from 1995
to 2020 in diabetic patients aged 18-65 years old.
This study confirms that Pancreatic Transplantation in Patients with Type 2
Diabetes Mellitus is a continually expanding practice and that SPKT is the most commonly
performed. The geographic discrepancy of this practice is also notorious, with 53% of the
studies referring to the United States of America.
Regarding outcomes, HbA1c level, average glycaemia and daily insulin requirements
had a significant positive evolution post-transplantation when compared with pretransplantation values. As for C-peptide, its levels either increased or remained constant in
most studies, serving as a positive proxy for endogenous production of insulin.
As for complications associated with the transplant, rejection rates ranged from 10
to 36%, and the remaining surgical complications (such as infections, abscesses, bleeding
and pancreatic leaks) ranged from 0 to 83%. The patient survival rate 1 year post transplant was higher than 90%, decreasing to
75-90% after 5 years. Regarding the grafts viability, these had a lower survival rate, ranging
80-90% after 1 year of transplantation and later, from 60 to 70% at 5 years postintervention.
In conclusion, a positive trend in pancreatic transplantation in type 2 diabetes
patients was verified, with survival rates and disease management analytical markers’
showing the intervention’s success. Thus, the need to equate pancreatic transplantation as
a new viable therapy, and eventual cure, for one of the most preponderant 21st Century
epidemics is demonstrated
Topazite from Minas Velhas da Queiriga (Viseu, Portugal) and related mineralizations – structural and paragenetic analysis
Distinct topaz paragenesis occur in Minas Velhas da Queiriga: as porphyroblasts in tourmalinites, as comb-crystals at the border of quartz veins (topazite) and in tourmaline-rich breccias linked to cross-cut quartz-albitic
veinlets (ongonite). The observed occurrence is probably related to anomalous concentrations of B and F possibly inherited from enriched protolithic fonts of exhalative nature, and result from extreme fractionation of hyper-aluminous melt, emplaced during uplifting, above a hidden granitic plutonite
hiPSC and hiPSC-cardiomyocytes are alternative EV biofactories for cardiac regeneration
In cardiac regenerative medicine, there is a growing interest in using EV as cell-mimetic therapeutics due to their potential superior efficacy and overall advantages over cell transplantation: i) absence of oncogenic risk, ii) low immunogenicity [1], iii) easier large-scale manufacturing and iv) consistent product profile. However, most studies have focused particularly on the potential of either mesenchymal or cardiac progenitor cell-derived EV to promote cardiac repair [2].
Here, we study the potential of human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC) and hiPSC-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CM) as alternative cell factories for the production of a high yield of therapeutic EV for cardiac regeneration. Due to their high self-renewal ability and capacity to differentiate into functional cardiomyocytes, these cells can provide an unlimited source of EV for application in cardiac regeneration.
We generated and characterized EV derived from key stages of hiPSC-CM differentiation and maturation, i.e. from hiPSC (hiPSC-EV), cardiac progenitors (CPC-EV), immature (CMi-EV) and mature (CMm-EV) cardiomyocytes, with the goal of studying their potential role as therapeutics, and whether their yield and function was influenced by the state of their parent cell. Two hiPSC lines were differentiated into hiPSC-CM and cultured as 3D spheroids in a fatty acid supplemented medium to improve CM maturation [3,4]. EV isolation was performed based on density separation on an iodixanol discontinuous gradient, and EV were characterized in terms of particle size and particle size distribution, presence of EV-specific markers, and imaging through transmission electron microscopy. Functional studies were performed using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) to evaluate EV-uptake, migration and angiogenesis.
EV yield varied along CM differentiation stages, with a minimum for CPC, for both cell lines. Bioactivity assays with HUVECs showed that uptake of PKH26-labelled EV could be blocked by dynasore, an inhibitor of dynamin-2, a GTPase that plays a crucial role in clathrin and caveolin-dependent endocytosis. Increased migration was observed in HUVECs treated with hiPSC, CPC and CM-derived EV (92.25 ± 14.69% wound closure at 24h for hiPSC, 77.13 ± 13.64 % for CPC, 74.71 ± 19.86% for CMi, 69.2 ± 19.12% for CMm versus 45.65 ± 7.26% for control), but angiogenic properties were found only for hiPSC-EV (fold change of 11.2 ± 4.59 in total segment length vs. control, p\u3c0.001).
Current efforts towards the characterization of EV small RNA cargo aim at understanding the correlation between cargo composition and in vitro activity, to identify the optimal cell factory for scalable therapeutic EV production.
